The Minneapolis teenager whose sudden death in 2022 shocked and saddened his classmates, school staff and members of his community, may soon have a street named after him. 

Next week the Minneapolis City Council will consider an application to honor DeShaun Hill Jr. with a commemorative street name. The application for the street name change was filed by council member LaTrisha Vetaw, who represents part of the city’s north side. 

, was the North High Polars’ quarterback and was hailed for being an academic standout. If approved, 16th Avenue North between Irving and Knox Avenues will become known as DeShaun Hill Jr. Way.

Hill’s name will join two other prominent north siders with commemorative street signs. Earlier this year, the city approved renaming streets after civil rights icons 

. Bernadette Anderson Way will be dedicated in a ceremony next Friday.
