After a wet night, most rain will lift north by Tuesday afternoon. Rain showers will turn to snow in northwestern Minnesota as colder air works in. We’ll all see snow showers Wednesday. 

Rain lifts north, turns to snow northwest 

It was a wet overnight and the rain will continue for the northern half of Minnesota Tuesday. Much of the state saw more than 1 inch of rainfall with many spots in west-central Minnesota closing in on close to 2 inches of rainfall since Monday evening.

Temperatures will drop through the day Tuesday as colder air wraps into the system. That means high temperatures will happen Tuesday morning for most. Temperatures will fall from the 50s in the southeast to the low 40s and from the low 40s in the northwest to the 30s by Tuesday evening.

The drop in temperatures combined with the precipitation moving north will result in a gradual changeover from rain to snow starting in northwestern Minnesota Tuesday afternoon and statewide by Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Additional rainfall will be highest along the North Shore, where some places could end up with 3 inches in total. Measurable rainfall will mostly cease for the southern half of the state. 

The bulk of snowfall accumulation will be in northwestern Minnesota into North Dakota where there will be enough moisture and cold air to do so. We could see a slushy coating on grassy surfaces in the Twin Cities Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Temperatures will remain much cooler the rest of the week with highs mostly in the 30s across the state. Wind chill values will be in the teens at times Wednesday in western Minnesota as winds pick up along with the colder air.
