Prompts winter weather advisories as cold air moves in Friday night

Temperatures will warm as we head into the weekend, with light snow showers possible near the border and North Shore. Another round of precipitation is expected early next week, with northern Minnesota likely to experience the heaviest impacts.

The wait for warmer weather is finally over as a ridge moves into the Upper Midwest, bringing in milder air. Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees above average, especially after the recent stretch of below-average temperatures. 

Low temperatures Friday night are expected to dip into the lower to mid-20s. With the added moisture from the warmer temperatures, there's a chance of freezing fog developing early Saturday morning.

Saturday will bring some sunshine with temperatures warming into the mid-40s. In southwestern Minnesota, highs could reach the upper 40s to over 50 degrees. 

Sunday will feature continued warmth with highs in the lower 40s. Cloud cover will begin to roll in ahead of another system that will affect the region Sunday into Monday. 

Light snow will begin Friday night, transitioning to a wintry mix late Friday into Saturday afternoon. The heaviest snow accumulation is expected overnight through early Saturday morning. 

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the northeastern parts of the state due to expected conditions. The Arrowhead could receive up to one-tenth of an inch of freezing rain, so caution is advised. 

We are tracking another system that will bring a wintry mix and snow to mainly areas north of Interstate 94 into the Arrowhead. Wet and heavy snow is possible for northeastern Minnesota Sunday night into early Monday. 

The metro area could see some very minor to light accumulations as the system exits the region Monday into Tuesday. 

Another surge of arctic air will move in behind the system, bringing teens and 20s back to the forecast by midweek. Expect another stretch of subzero wind chills during this time.
