Snow develops Friday before brutal cold next week

A widespread snowfall is on the way for eastern Minnesota Friday. Frigid arctic air moves in for Sunday into the middle of next week.
Snow Friday followed by an arctic blast
Temperatures are 10 to 30 degrees warmer than just 24 hours ago thanks to cloud cover moving in ahead of snow that develops Friday.
Look for patchy snow showers by midday Friday in portions of the state. Snow will fill in more through Friday afternoon and evening into the overnight. Most snow showers wrap up early Saturday.

A widespread, plowable snow is likely for the eastern half of the state into western Wisconsin. The heaviest snowfall will be in southeastern Minnesota where more than 6 inches could fall.

Northern Minnesota won’t miss out either — 2 to 4 inches is possible in Duluth and the North Shore into early Saturday.

There’s a winter weather advisory for eastern Minnesota into western Wisconsin from 2 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday.

There is some high boom-or-bust potential. The air aloft over much of central and southern Minnesota Friday morning is very dry. Some models are hinting at this cutting back snowfall totals with the initial onset of snow showers. This is why I think the best bet for the Twin Cities area is 1 to 3 inches of snow.

Temperatures will be briefly warmer Friday and Saturday. Look for near-normal highs in the 20s for southern Minnesota. Highs will be mostly in the teens north.

Saturday, too, will be reasonably close to normal for the Twin Cities and points south and east. but already colder air and north winds will be moving into northern Minnesota.

Subzero temps set to return
Early next week brings some pretty frigid air that could potentially rival what we saw in mid-January — something that’s not easy to do in February’s second half.
Sunday and Monday nights look the coldest with lows in the teens below zero for southern Minnesota and likely 20s and even some 30s below zero north.

Wind chill values both late Sunday and Monday nights will be 30 to even 40 below zero or colder.

Temperatures are back to normal by next weekend.
