April 7-11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week. It’s a time where we help educate the public about severe weather preparedness, safety and the importance of weather awareness. Let’s take a closer look at floods.
Floods
After heat, flooding is the second leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. It causes billions of dollars in damage each year and leads to dozens of fatalities.
"Turn Around, Don't Drown" is an important safety reminder during floods. Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas, as water can quickly become deeper and faster-moving than it appears. Even shallow water can sweep you away or cause your vehicle to become stuck. Always turn around and find an alternate route when encountering flooded roads.

Emergency kit
No matter the type of weather, it's important to have an emergency weather kit. Keeping one in the safest part of your home during storms ensures you're prepared for whatever weather may come your way. Here is a list of some items to keep in your emergency kit:
Flashlight
NOAA weather radio
Phone charger
Batteries
Blankets
3-day food and water supply
First aid kit
Whistle (to call for help)
Pet supplies
Medication
Extra clothes and shoes
