Prompts winter weather advisories as cold air moves in Friday night

Strong to severe storms are possible late Thursday. Cooler air then moves in for Friday into the weekend along with sunshine. 

Severe storms possible Thursday followed by cooler temps for the weekend 

Warmer air and higher dew points are moving into southern Minnesota Thursday combined with a low pressure system pushing across the state. Dew points could reach their highest readings this spring so far — into the 50s and even low 60s. 

Temperatures will also be warming up Thursday with highs well into the 60s and even 70s for southern Minnesota. Cooler conditions will prevail along the North Shore. 

This setup will develop some spotty showers during the day with a better chance of thunderstorms developing late afternoon into the evening hours. 

Storms that develop could be strong to severe. The storm prediction center forecasts a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe storms in southern Minnesota up to the southern Twin Cities metro late Thursday. The main threats will be large hail and some damaging wind gusts. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. 

Cooler air moves in Thursday night behind the system with lingering showers into Friday. Rain could mix with snow showers by Friday evening and overnight for northern Minnesota into early Saturday. 

Highs Friday will be cooler, mostly in the 50s and 40s. Those readings are slightly below normal for the date. 

We should see sunshine Saturday and much of Sunday with slightly cooler than normal temperatures Saturday and closer to 60 degrees Sunday. More rain is possible Sunday night and Monday.
