Don’t be alarmed by the smoke or flames coming from the northwest end of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport this week: the airport’s fire department is holding its yearly live fire training exercise.

First responders will train using a propane gas system simulating conditions they might encounter during an emergency. Officials said the exercise will not affect aircraft operations.

The training will run through Thursday.

The MSP Airport Fire Department will be joined by mutual aid partners serving other airports in the region, including the West Metro Fire Department and the Eden Prairie Fire Department. The training is federally regulated and required.
