The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office on Friday identified the man who was shot and killed by Coon Rapids police following a reported domestic incident earlier in the week.

Robert Edward Davis, 65, of Coon Rapids, died of a gunshot wound on Wednesday.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating whether police were justified in their use of force. 

According to their preliminary investigation, a woman called police after Davis cut her with a knife around noon at a residence on the 300 block of 111th Avenue Northwest in Coon Rapids. The BCA said Davis and the woman were in a long-term relationship and living together. 

Officers report trying to contact Davis from the entryway of the home while the woman and another man escaped.  

Police said they attempted to negotiate a surrender for “up to an hour,” but Davis refused to leave or drop the knife, which the BCA reports was a "folding utility knife." 

Officers said they told Davis he was under arrest and then one officer fired a 40 mm less-lethal launcher at him. Davis then moved further into the home and officers followed him, continuing to give verbal commands, before another officer fired another 40 mm less-lethal launcher. 

According to police, Davis moved towards a third officer, who then fired his department-issued handgun, striking Davis. A fourth officer deployed her Taser and Davis was subsequently taken into custody. 

The BCA said officers provided life-saving care, but Davis later died at the hospital.  

The female caller was treated for an injury to her hand and released after receiving care. The third person at the home was not injured. 

The BCA identified the involved officers as Timothy Morin, Steve Minion, Michael Blair and Emily Giese. The officers have between seven to 24 years of law enforcement experience. 

All officers were wearing body cameras during the incident, which the BCA continues to investigate.
