Extreme heat warning with dangerous heat indices

An extreme heat warning is in effect as dangerously high heat index values between 105 and 110 are expected, driven by soaring temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s and oppressive humidity with dew points in the 70s.

A prolonged period of dangerous heat is setting in, with extreme heat warnings and advisories issued until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Temperatures on Saturday will soar into the upper 90s to low 100s, with mid to upper 80s expected for northern Minnesota.

Dew points have surged into the lower to mid 70s, creating thick, tropical-like humidity and very uncomfortable conditions.

Hot temperatures combined with oppressive humidity will push heat index values into the 105–110 degree range on Saturday. It is strongly advised to take proper heat safety precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged time outdoors, and checking on vulnerable individuals.

Saturday night will offer minimal relief from the heat, with overnight lows staying in the upper 70s to low 80s for most areas, and only dipping into the 60s across the north.

Another steamy day is expected Sunday, with highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s. Breezy southerly winds will develop ahead of a cold front, bringing rain chances back into the forecast for late Sunday.

Severe risk for Sunday

There is a slight risk (2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Sunday, beginning in the afternoon across northwest Minnesota and expanding south and east through the evening and into the night.

The primary threats will be large hail and damaging winds. However, a tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly across west-central to northern Minnesota.

Next week brings a noticeable cooldown, with highs returning to the 70s and 80s. A cooler, wetter, and more active pattern is expected, with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms likely throughout the week.
