Another scorcher ahead: excessive heat and triple-digit indices

We’re facing another stretch of dangerous weather. Excessive heat continues with triple-digit heat indices, and the potential for severe thunderstorms exists across much of the state.

Another round of excessive heat is on the way, with temperatures soaring back into the 90s and even reaching triple digits in parts of the Buffalo Ridge Valley and Red River Valley.

An extreme heat warning and heat advisories remain in effect through 9 p.m. Sunday, with heat indices expected to range from 105 to 110 degrees.

Severe weather threat

Ongoing morning convection in western and northwestern Minnesota will continue through Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted northwestern Minnesota for stronger storms, with threats of large hail and damaging winds. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Sunday.

A low-pressure system moving north from Nebraska will lift into northern Minnesota Sunday, accompanied by a trailing cold front. This cold front will trigger strong to severe storms developing Sunday evening and continuing overnight into early Monday.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk (2 out of 5) for these storms, which could bring large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

Monday our temperatures cool down behind the front dropping back into the 70s and 80s.

A cooler, active, and wetter week is ahead, with multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms.

There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall from Tuesday through Thursday, with the potential for 2 to 3 inches of rain—and locally higher amounts exceeding 4 inches—possible during this period.
