A bipartisan bill proposed by U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison, a Democrat from the 3rd District, and Rep. Brad Finstad, a Republican from Minnesota’s 1st District, would provide millions of dollars to help law enforcement recruit and retain officers. Morrison, a Democrat who represents Minnesota’s 3rd district said the money is urgently needed.
“When we let these staffing shortages go unaddressed, we risk the safety of our communities and we also risk the safety of our officers," said Morrison.
The measure would make $50 million a year available for recruitment efforts for five years. The money would be distributed through a competitive grant making process.
Additionally, the bill would provide $250 million over five years to fund a nationwide campaign to encourage people to consider careers in law enforcement.
Asked about the chances the bill would become law, Morrison said she was “optimistic.”
“We're living in some pretty interesting and hyper-partisan times, to say the least, but I think most people agree about the importance of good law enforcement,” she added.
