Erin strengthened into a hurricane early Friday morning, becoming the first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic season to reach hurricane status.
From tropical storm to hurricane
Churning over the warm waters of the Atlantic, Hurricane Erin reached Category 1 strength early Friday, making it the first hurricane of the 2025 season. It’s current path is to the west-northwest around 18 mph and will be near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Erin is in a favorable environment for strengthening, although some drier air may limit further intensification.
The Atlantic hurricane season is now underway, marking the beginning of what could be an active few months in the tropics.
