Warm, muggy start to the fair; much cooler air this weekend
The first day of the Minnesota State Fair will bring more sunshine and warm and muggy conditions. Highs will be in the low 80s for most with dew points in the sticky 60s.
A significant cold front is still on track to move through the state Thursday night into Friday. It will touch off scattered showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday in northwestern Minnesota with a more or less broken line of showers ahead of the front reaching southern Minnesota by Friday morning.
There is a marginal (level 1 of 5) severe risk across much of the state Thursday into Friday but most activity should be pretty mellow.

Rainfall amounts look to be modest with most of us seeing less than one-quarter inch, if any, rainfall. It’s the only real chance of rain for the next seven to 10 days for most of the state.
Afternoon highs Friday will still be in the low 80s across much of central Minnesota before the real cool, dry air moves in. Dew points will drop from the 60s into the 50s and 40s for the weekend.
The big drop in temperatures comes for Saturday and especially Sunday and Monday. Afternoon highs Sunday will be in the 60s for almost all of Minnesota. If we don’t hit 70 degrees in the Twin Cities on any of those days, it will be the coolest August day in eight years!
The cool Sunday will set us up for a chilly Sunday night. Overnight lows will drop into the 40s for most of the state with just the urban core of the Twin Cities near 50-degrees. Parts of the Iron Range will likely see temperatures slip into the 30s.
