A man was fatally shot by police following an hours-long standoff Thursday at a home in West St. Paul.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating. 

The standoff started just before midday at a home on the 1200 block of Ottawa Avenue in West St. Paul, near Moreland Avenue. 

 from West St. Paul police, officers from neighboring St. Paul located a motorcycle associated with a man wanted on multiple felony warrants.

Officers surrounded the home and began evacuating other people inside, who confirmed the wanted man was in the residence. The South Metro SWAT team took command of the scene just after 2 p.m.

“The suspect fired shots striking the armored SWAT vehicles and an officer’s handheld ballistic shield over the course of the next four hours. The SWAT team utilized technology including a cell phone they were able to throw into the home, drones, and robotics in an attempt to negotiate with and obtain a visual of the suspect,” West St. Paul police 

The SWAT team also used several rounds of chemical irritants, but the man inside the home continued firing a gun at officers through the windows.

At about 6:40 p.m., police said, the man pointed a long gun at officers, and a SWAT team member then shot the man. The man was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities have not released the man’s name, or further details on the felony warrants. Police did not say whether the incident was captured on body or squad cameras. Authorities said there’s no ongoing threat to the public.

The standoff prompted a shelter-in-place alert for the surrounding neighborhood, as authorities blocked several streets and told nearby residents to stay inside and on the lowest level of their homes.

It also prompted a lockdown at St. Joseph Catholic School, a couple of blocks away — though police said it was a precautionary measure, and that there was no connection between the standoff and the school.
