Overnight patchy fog will make for a calm start to Sunday, continuing a warm and comfortable weekend. Later in the week, a strong cold front will sweep in, causing temperatures to drop and widespread showers to develop.

Our quiet and dry weather pattern continues to hold steady, with high pressure anchored over the Great Lakes and no sign of it moving out through the rest of the holiday weekend. Overnight, as temperatures fall into the mid to upper 50s and winds remain light, some areas may once again see patchy dense fog developing, especially near sunrise.

Sunday’s temperatures will trend a bit warmer, with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s across northern Minnesota, 80s once again in the northwest, and low to mid-70s expected across the southern part of the state.

Our weather will take a turn Tuesday into Wednesday as a cold front drops south out of Canada. Widespread showers are expected from late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, but with limited moisture and cooler air in place ahead of the system, rainfall totals are expected to stay on the lighter side — generally less than half an inch.

The bigger impact will be a sharp drop in temperatures. After highs in the mid to upper 70s on Tuesday, a much cooler air mass will settle in behind the front, with daytime highs struggling to reach the upper 50s on Wednesday and Thursday.

By next weekend, we’ll start to rebound slightly with highs in the mid-60s, but we’ll still run cooler than normal to start the month. Looking ahead, longer-range models suggest a mostly dry and slightly cooler pattern may stick around through mid-September.
