Monday night’s full moon will appear slightly larger and brighter during what’s known as a supermoon, the first of three expected this year.
A little extra moonlight for your Monday
Our night sky will shine a little brighter Monday night with the arrival of the harvest moon. Named for its timing near the autumn equinox, this full moon once provided extra light that helped farmers work late into the night, harvesting crops well after sunset.
This full moon also reaches its closest point to Earth in its 27-day orbit, resulting in a supermoon that appears subtly larger and brighter than usual as it rises in the east.
The supermoon will reach its peak illumination at 10:47 p.m. Monday night.
This October supermoon is the first of three expected this year, with the next two arriving Nov. 5 and Dec 4.
