Parts of two Twin Cities freeways will be closed this weekend as crews work on bridges over the highways.

A stretch of Interstate 94 in St. Paul will be closed all weekend, starting late Friday. And part of Interstate 494 in Bloomington will be closed from Friday night through early Saturday. 

This closure will affect both directions of traffic on I-94. For westbound drivers, the freeway will be closed between I-35E and Dale Street. Eastbound I-94 will be closed between Highway 280 and downtown Saint Paul.

The closure begins at 10 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to run through 5 a.m. Monday. Thru-traffic will be detoured to Highway 36.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the closure will allow crews to continue disassembling the John Ireland Boulevard bridge over the freeway. That bridge 

. It’s being rebuilt to ensure it remains safe under modern weight limits and is set to reopen next summer.

MnDOT says I-494 will be closed in both directions between Interstate 35W and Highway 77. That starts at 10 p.m. Friday and runs through 5 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic will be detoured to Highway 62, the Crosstown.

 will allow crews to pour concrete for the Portland Avenue bridge over the freeway.

On Sunday night, two freeway ramps in the I-494 construction zone will close for a month or more. That includes the ramp from northbound I-35W to eastbound 494, and the ramp from eastbound 494 to Lyndale Avenue.
