Fall glitches as record-high temperatures soar Friday

A burst of unseasonable warmth is sweeping across the region Friday, sending mid-November temperatures soaring far above normal and potentially breaking daily records.

The Twin Cities reached a record-breaking 72 degrees around 2 p.m. This also sets a new record for the latest and warmest temperature on record in the Twin Cities. The previous record was 71 degrees on Nov. 17, 1953.

After a few days of rising temperatures across the Upper Midwest, Friday brought us the region’s warmest day yet, with a chance to also break records with overnight lows.

Across Minnesota, Friday’s high temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 60s, with some areas in southern and southwestern Minnesota possibly hitting the low 70s.

Temperatures climbed rapidly Friday morning, with 11 a.m. readings 10-20 degrees above the average high for this time of year. In some cities, hourly temperatures surged 5-8 degrees, and by noon, readings had risen into the upper 60s, reaching around 70 degrees in southwestern Minnesota.

Multiple records could be broken across the state. Here are a few of the record high temperatures that are at risk of being surpassed:

• New Ulm — 71 degrees

• MSP airport — 71 degrees

• Marshall — 70 degrees

• Rochester — 68 degrees

• St. Cloud — 68 degrees

• Fairmont — 67 degrees

• Mankato — 67 degrees

• Worthington — 65 degrees

It’s not just the daytime highs that could set records. Friday night’s temperatures are expected to remain warm enough to break Saturday’s record for the overnight low for southern Minnesota.

Warm temperatures are expected to continue in the 6-10 day climatological outlook.
