As parade season kicks in and the evenings arrive early, this week’s picks offer a mix of music, theater and small-scale surprises. From Duluth’s gingerbread “city” to a new festival of collaborative work in Minneapolis, here are six solid ways to make the most of the week ahead.

‘Songs and Soundscapes’ at Aster House in Minneapolis — Nov. 21

This pairing lands in that sweet spot where two Midwest artists approach music like an unfolding conversation. Michael Shynes works in a folk pop R&B country blend shaped by a small-town sensibility and a clean falsetto, while DGS layers violin and viola with live effects that reshape the room in real time. 

 the result is a night built on texture storytelling and the slow burn of sound experimentation.

Milkweed Maps Festival of New Work at Pangea World Theater — Through Nov. 23

 circles around the idea of “milkweed maps,” a metaphor for how small creative gestures link into something larger and more sustaining. Each pair of artists treats the stage less like a showcase and more like a shared landing zone, testing how collaboration reshapes story. The result is a slow-blooming portrait of creative interdependence that suits a company built on crossing borders, literal and otherwise.

Fables & Flames Romantasy Gala at the DoubleTree near the Mall of America — Nov. 21–23  

 (the first ever) blends romance and fantasy in a way that feels more like a niche hangout than a hype machine. Expect author signings, panels, readings and vendors alongside low-key room parties, including a quiet space for folks who’d rather recharge than mingle. Guest writers like Sherrilyn Kenyon and Tricia Levenseller add range, and a tea party plus a book exchange keep things pleasantly bookish.

‘The Notebook’ at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts — Through Nov. 30

 keeps the novel’s frame intact, with an older man reading their history aloud as his wife’s memory slips in and out of reach. At the Ordway, the musical has a clear, steady tone and a score built for big feeling without the gloss. No performances on Thanksgiving, but the Wednesday and Friday shows bookend the holiday, and yes — Sparks did log a few Minnesota years while his dad studied at the U of M.

The smallest moments of recognition hit hardest

Pepperkakebyen Grand Opening at The Nordic Center of Duluth — Nov 21-Dec. 13

Duluth’s parade night comes with its own small-scale quirk

: a gingerbread “city” made from houses capped at two feet so they can actually fit through the door. The opening folds into the City of the North Parade, with the mixed-size village settling in for public viewing. A nod to Norway’s pepperkaker tradition, it shares a name with Bergen, Norway’s, well-known gingerbread town.

‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Guthrie Theater — through Dec. 28

 leans into the story’s colder, stranger corners, letting the ghostliness rise to the surface while weaving in traditional English carols like “The Holly and the Ivy.” At the Guthrie Theater, it lands with added weight after playwright Lavina Jadhwani’s death earlier this year. No show on Thanksgiving, but performances run on the Wednesday before and the Friday after.
