The clipper train rolls in this week, bringing occasional light snow and locking in the cold, with temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees below normal and the season’s first subzero reading possible.
Clipper trains and cold ahead
Multiple clipper systems will keep our skies busy this week and maintain snow chances through the first full week of December. However, snowfall from these clippers will be light, especially compared with this past weekend’s winter storm, which dropped up to a foot of snow across southern Minnesota and delivered a fresh 3 to 7 inches to the metro.
The colors showing up on the temperature maps are noticeably brighter—more typical of what we’d expect to see in January. Low temperatures will plunge into the single digits above and below zero, depending on how much cloud cover clears.

Wind chill values will drop into the mid-teens below zero in northwestern Minnesota, with single digits below zero across the rest of the state.
Under mostly cloudy skies, Monday’s highs will climb into the teens to around 20 degrees.
Several clipper systems will move through the region this week, bringing very light chances for snow. Monday could bring light accumulation to southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Another system from Tuesday night into Wednesday will bring light snow showers to northern Minnesota.
Thursday morning could bring the coldest lows of the season, with subzero readings. This comes about a week earlier than the average first subzero reading in the Twin Cities, which is around Dec. 10.
