Heavy snow and difficult travel expected again, heaviest snow in southern Minnesota

The cold air invasion has begun. The temperature at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport fell Wednesday from 26 degrees at 2 a.m. to 16 at 2 p.m. 

As the temperature continues to plummet Wednesday night, we’ll dip below zero for the first time this season.

The last time the Twin Cities observed a temperature below zero was Feb. 20. The earliest we've had the first subzero observation was Nov. 4 in 1991, and the latest was Jan. 19 in 2019. Last year, it was Dec. 11, which is right around average.

We may not quite hit daily records, but some communities should come within 5 or so degrees of records. 

Much of the state should drop between minus 10 and minus 15. It'll be a touch milder in the Twin Cities metro area with a low closer to minus 5. Wind chill values will be between minus 15 and minus 25.

Thursday remains cooler with highs staying in teens to low 20s. The warmer spots will be looking west.

Temperatures briefly warm Friday while still falling short of average by a few degrees, then we get another shot of cold air this weekend. By next Tuesday, it looks like we could return to near-normal temps.

Scattered snow showers Thursday afternoon and night could bring another coating — just enough for a slick evening commute.

The Canadian border keeps the best chance for 1 to 2 inches. Central and southern Minnesota will see minimal accumulation Thursday night.

Another system Saturday brings snow chances. Southern Minnesota has the best chance for a couple of inches. We'll keep an eye on the track of that system.
