A man was shot and wounded by St. Paul police officers on Sunday afternoon, after reportedly pointing a handgun at officers.

According to a statement from the St. Paul Police Department, it happened just after 3 p.m. St. Paul police were tracking a suspected stolen vehicle, which authorities disabled remotely near downtown, on the ramp from northbound U.S. Highway 52 to westbound Interstate 94.

When the vehicle stopped, a male driver and female passenger got out and started to run from the scene. The police department says the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at officers; police then fired their weapons at the man, striking him in the leg.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. No one else was injured.

The passenger was arrested. Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved. The police department said there is body-worn camera footage of the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating. The officers involved are on standard leave during the investigation.
