Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines announced Sunday that it’s merging with Allegiant.

The Las Vegas-based airline is buying Sun Country in a deal valued at about $1.5 billion.

 that the merger will lead to more reliable travel and allow expanded service overseas.

“Allegiant and Sun Country are well positioned to create one of the most adaptable and resilient airline models in the industry, with the ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions, traveler demand, and charter and cargo partner needs,” the statement said.

The new combined company will be headquartered in Las Vegas, but company leaders said they’re committed to keeping up a presence and a base of operations in the Twin Cities.

Sun Country officials said the merger won’t impact customers’ existing tickets. They said the combined airline will continue offering low fare prices.

Both companies say they expect the deal to close in the second half of the year, pending approval from federal regulators. 

Allegiant said the merger will provide more stability for employees by creating more year-round flying opportunities. It also said a larger airline will allow employees to have more advancement and training opportunities.
