The University of Minnesota, which starts its spring 2026 semester on Tuesday, says it will offer virtual learning options for some students. 

“This is not a blanket approach, because there is not one solution for every educational situation,” university leaders wrote in a letter to faculty, staff and students on Wednesday. 

School leaders have said that classes “will proceed as scheduled.” 

“We know many students welcome the opportunity to connect with each other and learn best in person. We also know that many students and instructors are concerned about their safety,” the letter acknowledged. 

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities, which enrolls more than 52,000 students attending classes in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, is also making security changes at campus doors “to ensure…buildings are as secure as possible.” 

University leaders urged faculty and students to “remain peaceful while expressing your views in coming days.” They also provided information on student and staff legal rights and instructions for what to do if approached by an ICE agent.

“Do not interfere with or get in the way of the actions of law enforcement officers, including if they disregard your instructions or requests,” University leaders wrote in instructions to staff.
