St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her said her office is complying with a subpoena served by the Department of Justice Tuesday. 

Her’s office was one of several local leaders served subpoenas, as part of a federal investigation into several local officials for allegedly impeding ICE operations. 

“We are talking with our legal team and figuring out a path forward,” Her said at a public event in St. Paul Wednesday. “We want to make sure that we really understand and comply.” 

She said she stands by St. Paul’s response to the federal immigration operation. 

“We have done our best to prepare for the — I believe — the lawlessness of ICE and their agents and how our cities have been under siege,” Her said. “I do believe that our response has been equal to match what we have been receiving.” 

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s office is also facing a subpoena; he, too, criticized the move by the Department of Justice. He called the subpoena “political retribution” and accused the federal government of seeking to intimidate local leaders for pushing back against the federal operation.

“We have been acting within the law. There is nothing that we have done wrong, and the fact that this is happening to leaders should make everybody, Republican and Democrat, livid,” Frey said. 

The office is continuing to review the subpoena, a spokesperson said. 

According to a copy of the subpoena shared with MPR News, a hearing is set for Feb. 3. The Department of Justice instructed Frey’s office to bring copies of emails, guidance and other documents issued since the start of the year related to the federal immigration operation.

The Department of Justice also served subpoenas to the offices of Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison and Hennepin County.
