In an interview Wednesday morning, MPR News guest host Catharine Richert talked about how ICE’s presence is reshaping access to health care in Minnesota — from what providers are seeing on the ground, to what it means for public health and how clinics and hospitals are responding.
Earlier this week, Richert spoke with William Aleman, a recently retired physician assistant in Rochester where she’s based. He’s originally from Ecuador and has been working with patients from Mexico, Central and South America for decades.
Aleman says that immigrants in a new country often face significant challenges.
“They are in a different country with different language,” says Aleman. “They are on minimum wage and they have to work two jobs to maintain their homes. So, they always have a little bit of anxiety, a little bit of depression.”
