Extreme cold holds through weekend, brief warmup Sunday

Arctic air continues to bring cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings to northern Minnesota, with quiet, calm, and frigid conditions expected to mark the end of the weekend.

Cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings remain in effect until noon Sunday across the northern half of the state, where wind chill values are expected to fall as low as 50 below zero in warning areas.

Light winds and low-level cloud cover will keep temperatures slightly warmer Saturday night than the previous two nights. Lows are expected to fall into the 20s and 30s below zero across northern Minnesota, with teens below zero in central areas and single digits below zero farther south. The low clouds may also produce a few flurries.

Temperatures will climb above zero Sunday across central and southern areas before a cold front ushers in another surge of Arctic air Sunday night.

A fast-moving clipper system is expected to slide southeast toward the northern Great Lakes on Monday, bringing the potential for light snowfall across northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

Northwest flow will persist through much of next week, bringing periodic shots of colder air. A few flurries are possible at times, but dry conditions should limit any accumulating snow. A gradual warming trend is expected by next weekend as milder Pacific air spreads across North America.
