Late January and early February in Minnesota have a way of sharpening the senses. This week’s picks sit right at that edge, where artists question what gets valued, musicians sit with emotional wreckage, theaters make room for inherited histories and winter itself becomes something to savor rather than survive.

‘Rejects Cohort 2026’ at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis — Through Jan. 31

 is a pointed, generous act of reimagining what gets seen and funded in Twin Cities dance. Now in its second year, this annual showcase brings together 22 Minnesota choreographers presenting works that were once cut, passed over or left unfinished, reframed as a collective argument for abundance over scarcity. 

By staging dance in a theater not built for it, the cohort pushes the form into new rooms and new conversations, responding directly to ongoing debates about arts funding by proving that rejected work still carries urgency, craft and power.

Del Water Gap at First Avenue in Minneapolis — Feb. 4

 lands like a diary entry cracked open under stage lights: tender, restless and unafraid of the mess. The project of New York-based songwriter and producer S. Holden Jaffe is touring its third album, a record that traces self-discovery through romantic wreckage, dimly lit rooms and the stubborn idea that being human means never fully having it together. 

With special guest Hannah Jadagu blending analog textures with modern pop instincts and a soft, soulful voice, the night feels tuned for anyone who has ever learned something important about themselves a little too late.

‘How to Catch Creation’ at  at Theatre in the Round in Minneapolis — Through Feb. 8

 is a quietly electric meditation on what it means to make art while inheriting history whether you want it or not. Playwright Christina Anderson braids the lives of four contemporary Black artists with the work of a Black feminist writer from the 1960s, creating a conversation across time about legacy, choice and creative survival. 

Directed by Vanessa Brooke Agnes and performed by a quartet of Minneapolis-based actors, the production feels intimate, intellectually alert and deeply local in the way it asks how artists in this city carry the past forward while building something of their own.

‘Hygge Fireplace Tour of Cook County’ across Cook County, Minnesota — Feb. 1–28

 is a monthlong permission slip to linger, lean into winter and warm up on your own terms. This annual self-guided tour spans 23 cozy stops, from lodges and resorts to a brewery and an art gallery, stretching from Lutsen to Grand Portage to the Gunflint Trail, with complimentary coffee, cocoa and marshmallows sweetening the pause. 

Highlights include the wood-burning fireplace at Gunflint Lodge, built with stone fragments from a two-billion-year-old meteorite, plus a new gamified pass with prizes that turns coziness into a low-stakes quest, all dreamed up by Visit Cook County to celebrate hygge as winter’s quiet superpower.

‘We Hold These Truths: American Art in 2026’ at Duluth Art Institute in Duluth — through 2026

“We Hold These Truths: American Art in 2026”

 opens a yearlong curatorial commitment marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by asking who gets centered in American art history. The dual exhibition pairs “Ojibwe Adornment in Ribbons, Cloth, Beads and Fur” by artist and curator Wendy Savage of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa with “Fur Trade Nation: An Ojibwe’s Graphic History” by Cloquet-based watercolor artist Carl Gawboy of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. 

Together, the shows foreground contemporary and traditional Native voices, treating history not as a fixed artifact but as living knowledge carried forward through material, memory and narrative.

Taken together, these events share a quiet insistence on presence: on staying with the work, the weather, the past and the parts of ourselves that don’t resolve neatly. Whether you’re warming up fireside, standing in a theater not built for dance or listening to a song that hits a little too close, the invitation is the same: slow down, pay attention and let the moment change you just enough.
