More than 400 people gathered outside of Minneapolis’ VA Medical Center, where Alex Pretti worked as a ICU nurse, for a vigil honoring his life.

Pretti, an ICE observer, was killed Jan. 24 by two federal immigration officers.

Attendees brought flowers, candles and signs that said “Justice for Alex” and “Care. Compassion. Courage.” The vigil was organized by the American Federation of Government Employees, of which Pretti was a local member.

Coworkers shared memories of Pretti, who they described as someone who always showed up for his patients and colleagues. 

Jessica Houser was the last nursing student Pretti mentored. She recalled that during her last shift before graduating, she had asked Pretti “How will I remember all of this without you there helping me?”

“He laughed, as he often did, and told me he has given me all his best advice. I was ready, but I could always call him,” she said.

And although he’s not here anymore, Houser said Pretti’s presence is still felt.

“Thank you for the impact you had, not just on my life, but on the lives of countless others. Your name has been spoken all over the world, from Minnesota to the halls of Congress, as a shining example of sacrifice and service. I know you would smile at that,” she said.

Mike Hoff of Grand Marais went to the vigil with his wife, sister and other family members, holding a sign that said “Trust Your Eyes, Not The Lies.” He grew up in St. Paul and wanted to pay his respects to Pretti.

He also said there were other personal reasons he came out.

“My brother-in-law is…an immigrant. And you know, that’s a huge reason for me being here,” he said.

He said he was also motivated to come by his sister, who teaches in South Minneapolis. Hoff said about roughly half of the students at his sister’s school are not attending school right now due to fears of encounters with ICE agents.

He said Minnesota is a better place because of immigrants and hopes people stand up for justice for them and Pretti.
