This week’s shortlist tracks systems under pressure, social, artistic, political and familial, and the point at which repetition becomes diagnostic rather than reassuring. 

From experimental theater that fractures a café ritual to legacy dance that still insists on urgency, these events ask what happens when we interrogate the structures we’ve inherited and decide whether they remain fit for purpose.

‘L’Addition’ at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis — Through Feb. 7.

International experimental theater arrives in distilled form with 

Bert and Nasi’s rigorously strange café fantasia,

 where a single polite interaction repeats until it collapses under its own logic. 

Directed by Tim Etchells of Forced Entertainment, the work uses radical mime, physical comedy and escalation to expose how everyday social rituals harden into absurd systems, earning its reputation as high-prestige European performance that locates humor not in punchlines but in precision, restraint and endurance.

‘Martha Graham Dance Company’ at Northrop in Minneapolis — Feb. 7.

Nearly a century after Martha Graham recast modern dance as psychological inquiry, 

 bearing both institutional gravity and present-tense urgency. 

The centennial tour frames Graham’s legacy not as sealed canon but as a continuing argument, anchored by “Appalachian Spring,” whose spare Americana still registers as quietly radical, and extended by a pre-show conversation with artistic director Janet Eilber that situates the work within today’s evolving dance ecology.

Jarrett Dapier to Present ‘Wake Now in the Fire’ at Red Balloon Bookshop in St. Paul — Feb. 7.

In an era of renewed book challenges, this conversation grounds the censorship debate in lived experience rather than abstraction. 

 Chicago high school students organized to overturn a districtwide ban on “Persepolis,” a story told through multiple viewpoints in his graphic novel “Wake Now in the Fire,” then extended in dialogue with local author and educator Nicole Kronzer about whose stories are protected, circulated and allowed to matter, followed by Q&A and a signing.

Frozen River Film Festival at Multiple Venues in Winona — Through Feb. 8, 2026.

Now marking two decades since its 2006 launch

 continues to operate less as a red-carpet showcase than as a civic commons for film in the Driftless Region. 

Spread across the ARC’s historic Masonic Theatre, the Winona County History Center and the Winona Arts Center, this year’s enormous film lineup leans into Minnesota stories, from performing memaids to ArtCar pageantry, and pairs them with filmmaker Q&As that keep the conversation grounded and local.

‘The Glass Menagerie’ at Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis — Through March 1.

Tennessee Williams’ defining memory play

 arrives as both period piece and pressure test, tracing how poverty, longing and nostalgia harden inside a single family until something has to give. Directed by artistic director Justin Lucero, this staging leans into the work’s emotional volatility, with a cast that treats memory not as soft focus but as a force that distorts, traps and occasionally offers escape.

‘Spies and Space: Cold War Artifacts From Both Sides of the Iron Curtain’ at The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis — Feb. 7–May 10.

 treats the Cold War less as distant geopolitics than as a shared imaginative system, where fear, fantasy and consumer spectacle circulated freely across ideological lines. 

Partnering with Minneapolis-based SuperMonster市City!, the museum assembles more than 200 toys, comics, games and ephemera, from a “Lost in Space” robot to “Man from U.N.C.L.E.” trading cards, tracing how espionage and the space race were absorbed, commodified and mythologized on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Taken together, this is a lineup less invested in comfort than in consequence, tracing how art responds when memory, power and habit begin to strain. Whether you’re watching systems unravel onstage, revisiting history through pop culture or hearing young people push back against erasure, the throughline is sustained attention, focused long enough that change becomes thinkable.
