Snow winding down after impressive totals

Light snow continued to fall across southern Minnesota early Saturday night, with winter weather advisories in effect until 6 p.m. for the Albert Lea, Faribault, Waseca and Mankato areas, and until 9 p.m. for southeastern cities including Preston, Winona and Rochester.

After a period of heavy snowfall earlier Saturday, several communities reported significant accumulations.

High pressure is expected to build into the Upper Midwest for the remainder of the weekend, keeping temperatures below normal. Cloud cover should prevent temperatures from dropping sharply overnight, but if skies clear late, northern Minnesota will see lows in the teens, near 20 below zero, with single digits through southern Minnesota. 

High pressure will build Sunday, but temperatures will remain on the cooler side, with highs in the teens across northern Minnesota and in the 20s for the southern half of the state.

The cooldown will be short-lived, with highs rebounding into the 30s and 40s on Monday. The seasonal high for the Twin Cities is 34 degrees.

A low-pressure system is forecast to move east across the central Plains into the mid-Mississippi Valley by early Tuesday, bringing chances for rain or snow across much of the region. Any snow that does occur is expected to be light, generally under an inch.
