1 person arrested, 38 cited and released after demonstrating against ICE surge outside Whipple

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says 38 people demonstrating outside the Whipple building Sunday morning were cited and released, and one person faces a riot charge and has been jailed.

Demonstrators gathered at the building as part of a weeklong effort to oppose ICE action in the state.

The sheriff’s office Facebook page announced the arrests occurred after deputies declared an illegal assembly and issued orders for the crowd to disperse.

The sheriff’s office said that people blocked roadways and access to local businesses, dumped glass into the street and threw rocks, ice chunks and water bottles at law enforcement.

“Freedom of speech and peaceful assembly is a right,” the sheriff’s office said. “Endangering the public is not. Unlawful activity including blocking roads, intentionally creating hazards and assaultive behavior will not be tolerated.”
