Minneapolis officials say speeding decreased significantly at several intersections after the city installed traffic safety cameras last fall.

, went into operation in October. The cameras detect potential speeding of 10 mph or more over the limit, and take photos and video of those vehicles — which traffic enforcement agents review. They can then issue violations to speeding drivers — a warning on the first offense, and then a fine. 

 at a Minneapolis City Council committee meeting on Tuesday, the number of vehicles going at least 10 mph over the speed limit dropped by more than 40 percent at those five intersections from when the cameras started operating, to the end of the year.

The number of vehicles going more than 20 mph over the speed limit dropped by more than 50 percent.

Minneapolis launches pilot program with cameras to catch speeding

Traffic enforcement agents issued nearly 34,000 violations to drivers caught on camera — with more than 29,000 of those being warnings. The traffic cameras resulted in about 4,300 citations.

The new report says the city is looking at adding more speed cameras starting in May. The city is also considering adding cameras to enforce red light violations.
