Snow possible Thursday with potentially heavy snow this weekend

Many saw fresh snow overnight. It will start melting Wednesday with afternoon sun. Two more systems are headed toward Minnesota Thursday and this weekend.

Many of us are waking up to a fresh coating of snowfall! It is still March, remember?

Most Twin Cities area totals were 1 inch or less, but just north and west of the Twin Cities and into northern Wisconsin saw more with some places receiving 3 or 4 inches.

We’ll see decreasing clouds through the morning. Expect some strong March sun by Wednesday afternoon with highs near 40 degrees. It will make for some significant melting. 

We’ll likely start the day with some sun Thursday, but clouds will race back in as yet another system moves into the region. Temperatures will remain relatively mild with 50s in southwestern Minnesota, 40s central and 30s north. 

Those temperatures are key Thursday as it will be warm enough to see mostly a few rain showers in the southern half of the state, including the Twin Cities.

Up north, it will be a rain and snow mix but mostly snow into Thursday night. It will also become quite windy late Thursday into Friday morning with gusts in western Minnesota up to 50 mph.

The North Shore will get a boost in snow totals due to lake enhancement as strong winds blow off Lake Superior. Broadly, northern Minnesota will receive a decent snowfall with little south.

We’ll get another break Friday, but a potentially larger, more organized storm is heading toward the region for the weekend. There’s an increasing potential for some pretty heavy snowfall somewhere in Minnesota, Iowa or Wisconsin Saturday into Sunday night.
