A string of three townhomes at Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen caught fire on Monday.

The townhomes, which make up one of many units, were “completely engulfed” by the time first responders from seven departments arrived around 2 p.m., according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Odyssey Resorts, the lodge’s owner, said in a Monday evening Facebook post the townhomes were safely evacuated and fire crews contained the blaze.

The sheriff’s office said in a Monday evening release that site is still active and warned the public to avoid the area.

The Lutsen, Schroder, Tofte and Grand Marais fire departments all responded along with Lutsen First Responders, Cook County Ambulance and Cook County sheriff’s deputies. The sheriff’s office said two other buildings were evacuated as a precaution and the state fire marhsal’s office had been notified.

Lutsen Lodging, a nearby rental property company, posted photos on Facebook earlier Monday showing heavy smoke pouring from the townhomes.

Odyssey Resorts said it is assessing the damage.
