‘Sponge cities’ in Minnesota soak up rain to help fight floods. Now Kansas City may follow suit

A hockey arena for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Prior Lake, Minn., features a 33,000-square-foot green roof with grasses, prairie plants and succulents. A four-year study found that the roof was consistently able to absorb rainfall below 0.25 inches. On days when the soil was quite dry, it could absorb up to 1 inch of rain.
