The city of Minneapolis will add a commemorative street name to honor the life of police officer Jamal Mitchell who was killed in the line of duty on May 30, 2024.

Mitchell was the first officer on scene near the intersection of Blaisdell and Franklin avenues to respond to a shooting call when he was fatally wounded.

During a council meeting Thursday, chief Brian O’Hara turned to Mitchell’s fiancée, Tori Myslajek, who was sitting in council chambers.

“Every time I go past Blaisdell Avenue and Franklin Avenue, I say a prayer,” O’Hara said as he choked up. “I hope that today, because of the action of this city council, it will provide some solace to you [that] this city for years and years and years, for everyone who goes past that intersection will know that the name Jamal Mitchell represents a hero.”

Council member Jamison Whiting also addressed Mitchell’s fiancée from the dais. Before he was elected to the City Council, Whiting had served as a police reform attorney.

“And my job, previously to this job, was finding those that embodied what it was to be a good officer,” he said. “And Jamal was one of those folks.”
