LaTonya Whitley Murck made the trek from Kingston Township, near St. Cloud, for her first DFL convention.
She said she and her husband moved to the area in retirement and were surprised to find other Democrats in their rural community, but they feel outnumbered in her red part of the state.
“Business owners won't let people know that they're Democrats,” she said. “They’re afraid to put signs up because they thought they might not get business.”
Murck added that some of her conservative neighbors, some of whom are farmers, are starting to express concerns about policies backed by President Donald Trump.
“I don't think that the Republicans were expecting what they've gotten from their vote,” she said. “They’re disgruntled, worried. But we're all worried and concerned.”
