Two men were injured, including a bystander, in a shooting early Friday in downtown Minneapolis. Police arrested the suspected shooter at his home about seven blocks away.
Sgt. Garrett Parten said that just before 8:30 a.m., a 25-year-old man was meeting with the suspect near 9th Street and Nicollet Mall when the encounter escalated and “gunfire occurred, and the 25-year-old man was struck,” Parten said.
Another man, 44, who was cleaning the sidewalk was also wounded.
“Officers provided immediate medical aid for both, potentially life-saving medical aid for the 25-year-old, and both of those men were transported to Hennepin Healthcare,” Parten said. “The last report I received is that they are both expected to survive.”
Investigators tracked the suspect to an apartment building on the 1600 block of 1st Avenue S., where officers established a perimeter. Police say the suspect surrendered around 10 a.m. and was taken into custody.
Authorities later executed a search warrant at the apartment and recovered evidence, including a firearm. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name.
