Now that a ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been lifted, many environmentalists are concerned about the potential for water pollution that would threaten animals and plants, including wild rice. 

MPR News host Clay Masters spoke with Ali Ling, an assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of St. Thomas, about the guardrails that could be put in place to prevent pollution and how mining near the federally designated wilderness can be done safely.
