Minnesota's drought situation took another step in the wrong direction this week. The drought conditions report released Thursday shows expanding dry conditions and the expanding of severe drought in southwestern Minnesota.
Drought conditions deteriorate
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report reveals a broad increase in abnormally dry conditions across western, central and eastern Minnesota, showing growing moisture deficits as the state heads into the heart of the growing season.
What’s more concerning is that moderate drought continues across central Minnesota and has begun to emerge in parts of southeastern Minnesota. Meanwhile, severe drought has expanded in far southwestern Minnesota, including Lincoln, Pipestone, and Rock counties.
The growing drought footprint comes at a critical time of year. June is one of Minnesota's most important months for crop development, and continued dryness could place increasing stress on crops if rainfall remains limited in the weeks ahead.
The latest drought monitor for crops and livestock in drought analysis shows that some of Minnesota's corn acreage is now located in areas experiencing moderate and severe drought.
With the growing season ramping up, additional rainfall will be needed to keep fields from drying out further and to support healthy crop development.
