Fillmore and Houston counties are under a flash flood warning following heavy rainfall with more to come

Record highs and overnight temperatures are falling all across the country this week, and certainly Minnesota has not been spared. That said, we’re closer to normal than you might expect on the temperature front. 

With all the rainfall recently, we’re getting a little bit of a break at times on Friday. We’re not completely done — there will be storms near Duluth. We’ll still be tracking scattered showers and non-severe thunderstorms for Independence Day. Saturday won’t be totally dry, but at least we won’t have quite as much lightning as in recent days.

For the first time in what seems like a very long time, there is not a single watch, warning, advisory or even special weather statement in all of Minnesota. There’s a good reason the above map is all clear. 

While the severe weather threat has thankfully migrated to our south, I don’t think we’re quite clear of storms Friday. The northeastern half of Minnesota — especially the Duluth to Brainerd Lakes area — is likely to get some more rain. 

Yet again, this looks like an MCV; listeners have noticed this week that these look like an ‘inland hurricane’ on radar but are not tropical. Anyways, these storms go from roughly 5:00-11:00 p.m. That stinks for some of the July 3rd barbecues but should help with any lingering drought up North.

Saturday also isn’t totally dry. We need to emphasize that no one will have a total washout at all for July 4. 

After a secondary round of storms near dawn in Hibbing and Duluth, we get an all-state break in rain. That only lasts a couple of hours. Showers and non-severe thunderstorms redevelop along an old boundary that’s effectively invisible to the eye — but we know it’s there. These start up around 2:00 p.m. and continue around the Metro area until roughly 8:00 p.m. At the moment, it looks like fireworks after 9:00 p.m. are a ‘go.’ 

 We do see the pattern begin to flip on Sunday, as higher resolution data is finally coming in to the weather center. It looks like we will heat back up to close to 90° and have drier conditions. And then by next week, we should see a huge improvement in trout in many locations.
