‘Unhealthy’ air quality expected in eastern Minnesota through Monday afternoon due to wildfire smoke

High pressure keeps sunshine in place Tuesday. It will still be hot with highs near 90, but dew points will be just muggy instead of oppressive like early Monday. 

This is the cool side of Monday’s front, believe it or not. After reaching 100 degrees Monday, many on Tuesday will still see afternoon highs near 90 degrees. That’s cooler than the last two days but still well above normal. 

Look for lots of sunshine thanks to high pressure centered over Lake Superior and light south winds developing. 

Dew points won’t be too bad, in the low to mid-60s mostly for Tuesday. That’s still muggy but not nearly as humid as early Monday’s 80-degree dew points. 

The dew point will increase again slightly Wednesday as the high pressure area moves away and return flow commences. 

That subtle increase in dew points means the risk of some isolated or spotty thunder Wednesday in at least central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Consider yourself lucky if you get a good downpour. 

The better chances of rainfall come Thursday night into Friday ahead of another weak cool front. We sure could use the moisture in central and southern Minnesota.

It is the convective season, so there’s never a guarantee with rainfall amounts with thunderstorms, but we could get some significant moisture. Many forecast models dump 1 to 2 inches across central and southern Minnesota. 

Behind this second cool front this week, temperatures and dew points will again dip ever so slightly for the weekend with highs still in the 80s statewide. 

Dew points will remain in the 60s south, but more comfortable dew points in the 50s are likely in northern Minnesota for the weekend.
