Minnesota lawmakers passed a first-in-the-nation law banning technology that allows the creation of nonconsensual nude images generated by artificial intelligence. Another recent law requires warning labels detailing the potential mental health harms of social media.
But enforcement of these laws is proving to be a challenge.
MPR News host Clay Masters spoke with Jane Kirtley, professor of media ethics and law at the University of Minnesota, about the difficulties states face as they try to regulate social media and AI use without infringing on First Amendment free speech rights.
