Seasonal and sunny this weekend

After a few scattered showers and thunderstorms, including some stronger storms, moved through Minnesota Friday morning and afternoon, quieter weather will settle in for the start of the weekend. A cold front will continue pushing southeast through Friday night, bringing an end to the rain chances.

Behind the front, drier air and northwest winds will arrive overnight, allowing temperatures to cool into the 50s by Saturday morning. Saturday looks like the pick of the weekend, featuring mostly sunny skies, light winds, and afternoon temperatures climbing into the low 80s, with 70s up north.

Rain chances begin to increase again late Saturday night and continue through Sunday as the stalled cold front lingers across Iowa, South Dakota, and Illinois. This boundary will serve as the focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly across southern Minnesota. Rain coverage is expected to be somewhat spotty, with the highest chances south of the Twin Cities.

Looking ahead to next week, several weak weather disturbances will move through the Upper Midwest, bringing periodic opportunities for showers and thunderstorms. The best chances currently appear to arrive Monday night into Tuesday and again late next week, with southern Minnesota favored for the greatest rainfall opportunities. Areas farther north will likely see fewer rain chances.

Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages through the middle of next week, with highs generally in the upper 70s to lower 80s. By late next week, a cooler pattern is expected to develop, allowing temperatures to trend slightly below normal across Minnesota.
