‘Kids literally disappeared’: Minnesota schools lost at least 1,700 students following Operation Metro Surge

Minnesota school districts with high numbers of English learners saw enrollment drops following Operation Metro Surge. When students started returning from online learning, North High paraprofessional Gabby Benavente Hobart recalled “a lot of joy” tempered by the feeling of loss for the students who didn’t return. “It was heartbreaking because their absence was definitely felt, and it was profound,” she said.
