Writer and commentator David Brooks is in central Minnesota to deliver the 20th Annual Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture, titled "The Road to Character and the Common Good," at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater on the St. John's University campus in St. Joseph.
The lecture series has a long history on MPR News. MPR News Presents has aired past McCarthy Lectures, including Tom Brokaw's sixth annual lecture at St. John's University in 2012 and Cokie Roberts' seventh annual lecture in Collegeville, sponsored in 2013 by the Eugene McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement.
Brooks is a familiar voice to MPR audiences, too. He spoke at the Westminster Town Hall Forum in Minneapolis in May 2015 about his book "The Road to Character." In an Aspen Ideas Festival lecture aired by MPR News, Brooks argued that people should separate "resume virtues" from "eulogy virtues," and that values like honesty, humility, self-control and courage can act as a counterweight to a competitive, publicity-driven culture. In another Aspen talk, he said a fulfilled life requires four commitments: to a spouse or family, a faith or philosophy, a community and a vocation.
