Former state Sen. Nicole Mitchell is back in the political spotlight, more than a year after a conviction on two felony burglary counts in Becker County forced her resignation.

On Tuesday, Mitchell was elected to the Woodbury City Council, beating out incumbent Steve Morris by 101 votes. In her victory, Mitchell clinched one of two at-large seats, along with Samantha Wolf. Ten candidates were vying for the two seats.

In 2024, Mitchell was arrested by law enforcement officers at her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home after gaining entry through a basement window. At the time, police body camera footage captured Mitchell, dressed in black, saying she was there to retrieve some of her recently deceased father’s belongings. But at trial, Mitchell testified she went to the home to check on the well-being of her stepmother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

The jury took around three hours to deliver a guilty verdict.

Mitchell, a former MPR News meteorologist, served in the Minnesota Senate from 2023-25.
