Amy Klobuchar won the election for Minnesota’s governor’s race. She’ll be the state’s next governor and someone new will be chosen fill the U.S. Senate seat she leaves behind.
Since the election, a list of potential appointees has been growing. Here’s what we heard from the MPR News audience, but who do you want? Vote on who interests you or submit the name of who you’d like to see appointed.
How does Klobuchar’s seat get filled?
When a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant, the governor of Minnesota appoints a temporary senator until a special election can be held, according to state law. Whether current Gov. Tim Walz or Klobuchar makes the appointment will depend on when Klobuchar resigns her seat. Klobuchar will be sworn in as governor on Jan. 4.
Walz could signal his choice between now and Klobuchar’s inauguration, but he can also defer that appointment to Klobuchar once she’s inaugurated. In turn, Klobuchar can also wait until right before she’s inaugurated to resign from the Senate.
Klobuchar’s appointment of someone to fill her own Senate seat could be her first act as governor.
