As COVID-19 cases continue to spread in the United States and around the world, the country could gain a difficult title of sorts, according to reporting by Atlantic writer Ed Yong: The U.S. could end up with the worst outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the industrialized world. Hospitals in some major cities are running low on protective equipment. Many are bracing for predicted peaks of patients.

Meanwhile, researchers and officials are racing to find solutions — like a treatment to help patients fight the virus and a possible vaccine to protect against infection.

On Thursday, host Kerri Miller spoke with Yong about his reporting on pandemic preparedness, how a lack of testing continues to affect U.S. efforts to curb the virus and what researchers will be looking for after the pandemic ends.
